Maria Dimadi: The resistance spy executed in Agrinio

On August 31, 1944, Maria Dimadi, a resistance figure in Agrinio, was executed by collaborators during the German occupation of Greece. Dimadi served as an intelligence source for the Greek resistance, specifically ELAS, by utilizing her position as an interpreter at the German garrison in Agrinio to gather and relay critical information.

Her intelligence work is credited with enabling the ELAS ambush of a German convoy in Myrtya, Aetolia-Acarnania. Despite coming from a well-educated and affluent background, Dimadi engaged in high-risk espionage. She was eventually arrested by the Security Battalions and executed shortly before the liberation of the city. Today, she is commemorated in Agrinio, where a central square bears her name.
