Maria Elvira Salazar dissents from Trump immigration policy
Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida has publicly expressed dissent regarding Donald Trump’s immigration policies, suggesting that his approach has been “exaggerated.” This move comes amid concerns that strict immigration enforcement and deportations are becoming a political handicap for the Republican Party, particularly with the Hispanic electorate ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Despite the public criticism, Salazar described a recent private discussion with Trump as “fantastic,” noting that the President was courteous and that they reached an agreement aimed at ensuring party success. Salazar focused her criticism on the advice given to the President rather than attacking him personally.
This internal friction follows previous shifts in administration policy, such as the replacement of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol leader Greg Bovino by Markwayne Mullin, following incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota.
