Maria Korinthiou recalls personal experience of September 11 attacks
Greek actress Maria Korinthiou has shared her personal recollections of the September 11 terrorist attacks, marking the 25th anniversary of the event. Korinthiou, who was 18 years old at the time, was living in Boston and beginning her first day of university when the attacks occurred.
She described the scene as “pandemonium,” noting that she was in the process of getting her student ID photographed when news of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers broke on television screens. She witnessed the live broadcast of the second plane hitting the second tower and later learned of the attack on the Pentagon.
Korinthiou recalled the uncertainty and chaos of the period, noting that classes were canceled and an evacuation order was issued. She described the difficulty of communicating without modern smartphones or social media, as phone lines were overwhelmed, forcing her to remain housebound for three days while awaiting news updates. She noted the emotional weight of the anniversary as her own child begins their university journey.
