Maria Narez arrested in Mexico after 30 years on the run

Maria Narez, 48, has been arrested in Mexico following a joint international law enforcement operation after nearly 30 years on the run. Narez is facing capital murder charges in Tarrant County, Texas, related to the 1996 death of her three-year-old daughter, Kasandra L. White.

According to a 1999 Tarrant County grand jury indictment, Narez allegedly shook her daughter and threw her against a wall, causing the child to strike a door with her head. Following her initial arrest in late 1996, a judge reduced Narez’s bond from $500,000 to $25,000. She subsequently fled to Mexico in August 1997 after failing to appear for her proceedings.

The arrest was the result of collaborative efforts involving Mexico Interpol, the U.S. Marshals Service Mexico Foreign Field Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Justice. Narez remains in custody in Mexico while authorities initiate formal international extradition proceedings to return her to Texas for arraignment.
