Maria Àngels Francés assumes presidency of the AVL
Maria Àngels Francés Díez has taken office as the new president of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL). During her inauguration at the Palau de la Generalitat, she outlined several strategic priorities, including the adaptation of the Valencian language to new digital environments and the rise of artificial intelligence.
Francés aims to establish linguistic norms that are accessible and useful for both native speakers and those learning the language, while also working to increase the social prestige of Valencian. She emphasized the need for the institution to be clear in its regulations while remaining close to the citizenry in social and professional spheres.
During the ceremony, the President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, called on the new president to ensure the language does not become a tool for political confrontation. He urged the AVL to act as a point of consensus and academic rigor, noting that the institution must represent all Valencian speakers regardless of political ideology. This call for unity comes as the institution faces budget cuts.
