Police have placed Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, on remand following the death of Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam Khatun. Mariam’s body was discovered hanging in a flat at the NAM building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on September 20, 2026.

A case of abetment to suicide has been filed by the deceased's father, Masum Billah. The investigation aims to determine if the accused provided mental pressure, threats, or direct provocation leading to the suicide. During the court hearing, Nazrul was granted a four-day remand, while Maksuda was granted one day for questioning.

Nazrul, who was previously expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami in July following controversy regarding a personal video, was reportedly present in the residence at the time of the incident. Police are also following procedures to inform the Speaker of Parliament regarding the arrest of a lawmaker.
