Mariama Bâ: The enduring legacy of a Senegalese feminist icon

Forty-five years after her death, Senegalese author Mariama Bâ remains a foundational figure in African literature. Born in Dakar, Bâ was a teacher and activist who used her writing to address the social realities of women, including polygamy, maternity, and the importance of education for female emancipation.

Her seminal novel, ‘Une si longue lettre’, explores themes of widowhood and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society. The work continues to resonate in modern Senegal, with contemporary activists noting that many of the issues Bâ highlighted remain relevant today. The novel is currently part of the Senegalese school curriculum and was adapted into a film in 2025 by director Angèle Diabang.

While more Senegalese women are now writing about intimate subjects such as divorce, sexuality, and religion, observers note that female authors still face challenges in gaining visibility in mainstream media and public conferences.
