Rio Doce Basin agreement expands as 19 more municipalities join dam disaster reparations

The Rio Doce Basin reparation agreement, established following the 2015 Fundão dam collapse, has gained significant momentum. A new round of negotiations mediated by the Tribunal Regional Federal da 6ª Região (TRF6) has resulted in 19 additional municipalities joining the pact. This brings the total number of signatory cities to 45 out of the 49 eligible municipalities affected by the disaster.

Among the new signatories is Mariana, the epicenter of the collapse. The city is expected to receive R$ 1.2 billion from Vale and BHP Billiton. The new members will gain access to approximately R$ 2.6 billion intended for public policies and compensation, with initial payments expected within 30 days of judicial compliance.

While the majority of affected areas are joining the agreement, some municipalities, such as Ouro Preto, have opted to remain outside the pact. These cities continue to pursue legal action in both Brazil and the United Kingdom to seek what they deem to be fairer reparations for the environmental and social damages caused by the Samarco joint venture.
