Mariana dos Santos Candido dies after colonoscopy complication in São Paulo

Mariana dos Santos Candido, a 41‑year‑old school‑organization agent and mother of three, died on 29 July 2026 after her intestine was perforated during a routine colonoscopy at the Hospital Municipal Professor Doutor Alípio Corrêa Netto in Ermelino Matarazzo, São Paulo. The procedure was performed by the outsourced Clínica de Endoscopia Salinas, which has provided endoscopy services at the hospital for 25 years. Family members said the colonoscopy caused a laceration that damaged about half of her colon – “Eles falaram que rasgaram 50 % do intestino dela.” – and she was taken immediately to emergency surgery that lasted six hours. She remained intubated and in a coma but did not survive. The day before the exam she had called her aunt, Mara Pongelupi, saying, “Tia, eu te amo… estou com medo.” After the death the family complained that the hospital refused to disclose the name of the laboratory or the physician responsible. The São Paulo Municipal Health Secretariat opened a sindicância to investigate the incident, and the case was registered as a suspicious death with a necropsy pending. The tragedy has sparked debate over the safety and transparency of outsourced medical services in Brazil’s public health system.
