Mariana implements foster family program for child protection

The City Hall of Mariana, through its Secretariat of Social Assistance, continues to operate the 'Família Acolhedora' (Foster Family) service, which has been active in the municipality since 2018.

The program provides temporary housing for children and adolescents who must be removed from their biological families due to judicial orders involving risks such as violence, neglect, or abandonment. Unlike institutional shelters, this service places youth in the homes of trained, registered families to provide individualized care and emotional security.

Under Law 12.010, family-based care is recognized as a preferred protective measure over institutionalization. The placement is temporary, typically lasting up to 18 months, after which the youth either returns to their original family or is placed for adoption.
