Mariano Melgar residents protest abandoned road works
Residents of the Jerusalén community in the Mariano Melgar district have protested against the alleged abandonment of roads following water infrastructure works. The project, managed by Sedapar, involved excavating trenches to install pipes intended to transport water to districts including Socabaya, Sabandía, and Characato.
Local leaders report that the contractor, J&D, failed to meet the 60-day completion deadline established in a social license agreement signed on June 16. Although work was expected to conclude by August 16, residents claim that as of mid-September, the roads have not been restored to their original condition.
The ongoing construction has caused significant local disruptions, including excessive dust that affects residents with respiratory issues and the suspension of public transport services on Misty and Sudamérica streets. Residents are demanding a new work schedule and better supervision of the project.
