Maribor allocates millions for school and kindergarten upgrades

The Municipality of Maribor is allocating over 8.5 million euros this year for the renovation, investment, and equipment of kindergartens and primary schools. A major energy renovation project for public buildings, valued at 14.3 million euros, is scheduled to begin this autumn, with most work expected to be completed in 2027.

Specific investments include approximately 3.26 million euros for kindergarten investments and 250,000 euros for equipment in 2026. Notable projects involve kitchen renovations at the Jožice Vrtca Flander and Jadvige Golež units, as well as repairs to sanitary facilities, facades, and terraces. For primary schools, roughly 4.9 million euros is earmarked, including a 2.8 million euro expansion of the OŠ Angela Besednjaka.

Regarding student numbers, Maribor expects approximately 3,634 children in public kindergartens and 8,980 students in primary schools for the 2026/2027 school year. This represents a slight decrease compared to previous years, reflecting broader demographic trends. Despite these fluctuations, the municipality maintains that existing spatial capacities are sufficient to meet local needs and that there is currently no central waiting list for kindergarten placement.
