Maribor expands pedestrian and cyclist spaces in city centre
The City of Maribor municipality has approved a major overhaul of the public realm in the city centre. The plan, branded “UMIRJENO – Skozi mesto hiti počasi”, will rebuild Gregorčičeva Street, General Maister Square (Trg generala Maistra), sections of Tyrševe Street and Heroj Staneta Street. It aims to make the area safer, greener and more pleasant for residents and visitors.
Key physical upgrades include the planting of more than 60 new trees, the installation of 42 benches and 54 bicycle stands across the four zones, and the conversion of General Maister Square into a shared traffic space that gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists while removing on‑site parking. Municipal utilities will be modernised to improve reliability and reduce future maintenance needs.
A parallel renovation of Maribor’s City Park will add 339 trees, 360 forest saplings, 2,994 live‑fence saplings, 1,358 shrubs, 617 roses and 900 ornamental plants, together with new sand paths, upgraded drainage and restored heritage features. The work will be carried out in phases, with the municipality organising resident meetings before construction and maintaining a dedicated information service throughout the project.
