Brazil health sector reports major transplant milestones and donation drives
Various health initiatives and medical milestones are being reported across Brazil, focusing on organ and blood donation. In the context of 'Setembro Verde' (Green September), the Fundação Pró-Rim and the CBF have partnered to promote organ donation awareness during the 27th round of the Brasileirão, addressing the needs of nearly 50,000 Brazilians currently on transplant waiting lists.
Several regional campaigns are underway to replenish blood supplies. In Bonito, the municipal government and Hemosul are organizing a donation drive for September 24. In Minas Gerais, the Instituto Credicom and Hemominas recently completed a campaign that benefited up to 180 people. Other efforts include Masterboi’s 10th blood donation campaign in Recife and a drive at the Hospital Municipal de Santarém.
Significant medical achievements include the Hospital Santa Isabel in Blumenau reaching a milestone of 2,000 liver transplants. Additionally, the RJ Transplantes program in Rio de Janeiro successfully performed the state’s first isolated intestinal transplant. In Maricá, the Hospital Municipal Dr. Ernesto Che Guevara facilitated the donation of kidneys, liver, bones, and ocular tissue for the SUS transplant network.
