Maricopa County voter data breach goes unprosecuted
In 2020, a hacker illegally extracted about 633,000 voter registration files from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office in Arizona. The stolen data included names, birth dates, addresses and, for roughly 930 individuals, sensitive information such as domestic‑violence victim status, judges and law‑enforcement officers. The suspect admitted the crime, stored the files on a home hard drive and destroyed them before a Federal Bureau of Investigation raid.
The FBI confirmed the breach, identified the suspect and urged prosecution, but the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, the Maricopa County District Attorney and the Pinal County District Attorney all declined to bring charges. No ballots were accessed or altered, but officials said the incident exposed a major vulnerability in the voting system.
Despite the FBI’s investigation and the suspect’s remorse, the case was closed without any criminal filing.
