Mariel thermoelectric plant sabotage investigation
Authorities in Artemisa, Cuba, have launched a sabotage investigation following the theft of electrical cables at the Máximo Gómez Báez Thermoelectric Plant in Mariel. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on September 2, when individuals cut energized cables connecting Unit 8 to the fuel supply house.
According to the provincial prosecutor's office, 135 meters of 19-way cable were stolen, causing the sudden and unplanned loss of power generation from the unit. Investigators have identified four individuals involved: two direct perpetrators, who are currently in provisional prison, and two security guards who failed to detect the incident and are out on bail.
Law enforcement recovered 67 meters of the stolen cable. The State Security Crimes Unit has opened a preparatory phase file for suspected sabotage and failure to fulfill the duty to preserve assets in economic entities.
