Marijuana use in the U.S. reaches record high as cigarette use hits record low

Recent Gallup polling indicates that marijuana use among U.S. adults has reached a record high of 17 percent, matching the previous peak recorded in 2023. This figure represents more than double the 7 percent usage rate reported in 2013.

In contrast, cigarette smoking has hit a record low, with 11 percent of U.S. adults reporting use. Other nicotine-related data shows 9 percent of adults vape and 4 percent use nicotine pouches.

Public opinion regarding marijuana remains divided; 47 percent of respondents believe the drug has a positive impact, while 46 percent view its effect as negative. Data from the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics suggests marijuana usage in the U.S. climbed approximately 65.2 percent between 2015 and 2024.
