Marikana massacre: South Africa marks 14 years since police killing of 34 miners

South Africa marks the 14th anniversary of the Marikana massacre, an event where police opened fire on striking mineworkers at a Lonmin platinum mine on August 16, 2012. The incident resulted in the deaths of 34 miners and left 78 others injured, becoming one of the most traumatic episodes in the post-apartheid era.

The strike was driven by demands for significant wage increases and better living conditions. The violence sparked national and international outcry, leading to a judicial inquiry headed by Judge Ian Farlam, which identified serious failures in the police operation.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has seen its political influence grow. The union’s Labour Party, registered in early 2024, is now positioning itself for local government elections, citing the failure of the existing political system and the ongoing struggle for a living wage as motivations for its formation.
