Marin Alsop to make Romanian debut at George Enescu Competition
Renowned conductor Marin Alsop will make her Romanian debut at the Romanian Athenaeum as part of the 20th George Enescu International Competition. Leading the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Alsop will conduct a final concert dedicated to the Composition Section.
The program features contemporary works by Zygmunt Krauze, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Steven Mackey, and Doina Rotaru. Notable pieces include Krauze’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 3, Fragments of Memory’, where he will perform as soloist, and Snider’s ‘Forward Into Light’, an orchestral work composed for the New York Philharmonic’s Project 19 initiative.
Alsop, a protégé of Leonard Bernstein, is a pioneering figure in conducting. She was the first woman to lead prestigious orchestras in the United States, South America, Austria, and the United Kingdom, and remains the only conductor to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. Her recent accolades include the Golden Baton from the League of American Orchestras.
