Marin Lungu, WWII veteran and retired Major General, dies at 90

Retired Major General Marin Lungu has passed away at the age of 90. A prominent figure in the history of the Romanian Army, Lungu gained international recognition for his extraordinary experiences during World War II.

Born in the village of Neatârnarea, Tulcea County, Lungu joined a military unit in Medgidia following the death of his grandfather. In August 1944, as Romanian troops moved to the Western Front, he accompanied his unit to combat zones in Transylvania. Despite his young age, he held the rank of corporal at just 9 years old.

During the conflict, Lungu performed intelligence duties, gathering data on German troop positions and locating weapon depots. His service later took him to Czechoslovakia, where he was captured and held in a Nazi concentration camp. After surviving the war and being released, he received care from the International Red Cross.

For his bravery, Lungu was decorated with four military honors, including the ‘Virtutea Militară de Război’, class I. His life story has been documented in books, films, and documentaries.
