Marin Miletić sparks controversy with calls for public executions
Marin Miletić, a member of the Most party, has sparked intense political backlash following controversial remarks made during a parliamentary debate in Croatia. Criticizing the judiciary and corruption, Miletić suggested radical punishments for those who harm the state, including public hangings and burning individuals. He stated that if his party came to power, they would “pour gasoline on everything and burn it” to rebuild institutions from scratch.
The remarks drew sharp condemnation from across the political spectrum. The HDZ party described Miletić’s rhetoric as a “totalitarian mind” that seeks to liquidate dissenters. Ivana Kekin of the Možemo! party compared his suggestions to public executions in Taliban-led Afghanistan and the atrocities committed during the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) era, labeling the rhetoric as “terror” rather than justice.
Additionally, political figures and commentators have linked the rise of extremist rhetoric in the public sphere to broader social trends in Croatia, noting that such language mirrors historical periods of violence and instability.
