Marina Abramović retrospective to open at GNAMC in Rome
The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAMC) in Rome will host a monumental retrospective for artist Marina Abramović starting November 17, 2026, to celebrate her 80th birthday.
The exhibition, titled ‘Marina Abramović: Historical Works and Transforming Energy’, expands upon her previous presentation at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice during the 61st Venice Biennale. The Roman exhibition will be divided into two main sections: ‘Historical Works’, curated by Andrea Tarsia, and ‘Transforming Energy’, curated by Shai Baitel.
A central focus of the show is the ‘Transitory Objects’ series, a project developed over three decades. These works consist of stone beds and sculptural forms made from minerals such as quartz, amethyst, and agate. Designed to explore the relationship between the human body and geological time, these objects invite viewers to interact physically by sitting, lying, or standing on them, often accompanied by headphones to create a contemplative experience.
