Marina Alta employment hits record August levels despite seasonal decline

The Marina Alta region has experienced a seasonal decline in employment following a record-breaking July. According to data from the Observatori Marina Alta, the region recorded 70,242 Social Security affiliations in August, a monthly decrease of 1.48% (1,057 fewer affiliations) compared to July.

Despite this monthly dip, the August employment level remains the highest ever recorded for that month in the region's history. Year-on-year data shows a 5% increase, with 3,333 more affiliations than in August of the previous year.

The decline is primarily concentrated in sectors tied to the summer tourism season. Accommodation services saw a reduction of 350 affiliations, retail lost 234, and sports, leisure, and entertainment activities decreased by 118. Together, these sectors accounted for approximately two-thirds of the monthly job losses.

Unemployment rose by 77 people in August, reaching a total of 7,282. However, the overall employment base remains stronger than the previous year, with accommodation and retail sectors still maintaining higher affiliation numbers than they held in August of last year.
