Marina di Pisa accessibility concerns raised in Pisa City Council
The replacement of an accessible swing for children with disabilities in Marina di Pisa has become a subject of debate within the Pisa City Council. During a recent 'question time' session, Councilor Maria Antonietta Scognamiglio raised concerns regarding the new equipment installed in the park on via dell’Ordine di Santo Stefano.
The original swing, donated in 2021, allowed children to remain in their manual or electric wheelchairs while playing. The new replacement is a ‘basket-style’ swing, which requires children with disabilities to be transferred from their wheelchairs into the seat, potentially limiting accessibility for those with significant motor impairments.
Scognamiglio also questioned the administration's decision to replace the structure without notifying the original donors, which included the 46th Brigade and the Associazione Crocerossine d’Italia.
