Italy implements various maritime safety and environmental protection initiatives
Various initiatives across Italy are focusing on maritime safety, environmental protection, and the sustainable management of marine resources. The Italian Coast Guard has signed a three-year agreement with the Lega Navale Italiana to promote maritime culture, navigation safety, and environmental education, particularly for youth.
Environmental conservation efforts include the establishment of a specialized cetacean recovery center in Taranto and volunteer-led waste collection projects in Calabria, Liguria, and Ancona. Additionally, scientific research is advancing through the DEEP-IMPACT project in the Ionian Sea, which uses underwater robotics to study deep-sea ecosystems.
Economic and regulatory actions are also underway, such as the release of 350,000 euros in Lombardy to support sustainable professional fishing and the inauguration of the Trapani Fish Market to promote local supply chains. Meanwhile, law enforcement operations like Fair Fish Catch in Lazio have resulted in significant fines and the seizure of nearly one ton of untraceable seafood to combat illegal fishing.
