Marina Vlady, French-Russian cinema icon, dies at 88
French-Russian actress, singer, and author Marina Vlady has died at the age of 88. Her family announced that she passed away at her home, surrounded by loved ones and her pets.
Vlady had a prolific career spanning over seven decades, appearing in more than 80 films. She was a prominent figure in European cinema, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. Her notable achievements include winning the Best Actress award at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival for her role in ‘Le Lit conjugal’ (The Conjugal Bed), a performance that also earned her a Golden Globe.
Throughout her career, she collaborated with legendary directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Orson Welles, Bertrand Tavernier, and Ettore Scola. Beyond acting, she was a successful singer and a published author of approximately ten books, including her memoirs ‘24 images/secondes’ and works regarding her marriage to the renowned Soviet poet and singer Vladimir Vysotsky.
Born Marina Catherine de Poliakoff-Baidaroff to Russian emigrant parents, she was active in social and political causes throughout her life. Her legacy remains significant in both French and Russian cultural spheres.
