Marine animals demonstrate massive scale advantages over land species

Data compiled from Fact Animal and World Atlas highlights the massive scale difference between marine and terrestrial animals. The blue whale leads as the largest animal, with a reported maximum weight of 420,000 pounds (approximately 190 tons), which is more than 18 times the weight of the largest land animal, the African savanna elephant (23,000 pounds).

In the ocean, the ten heaviest animals are all whales. Following the blue whale, species such as the North Pacific right whale, fin whale, and bowhead whale reach weights of approximately 260,000 pounds (120 tons). On land, the African savanna elephant is the heaviest, followed by Asian and forest elephants, hippopotamuses, and various rhinoceros species.

Separately, researchers from OCEARCH are tracking a massive male great white shark named ‘Contender’ in the Atlantic. Measuring approximately four meters in length and weighing 770 kilograms, it is the largest male of its lineage cataloged by the team. Scientists are using satellite transmitters on the shark's dorsal fin to monitor its seasonal migration toward northern tourist areas.
