Marine animals shrink due to ocean warming, study finds

An international study conducted by researchers from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the University of Warsaw, and the University of Lille has identified a recurring pattern known as the ‘Lilliput effect’ in response to environmental crises. By analyzing nearly 9,000 size changes across fossil, historical, and modern data spanning 450 million years, scientists found that marine animals—including mollusks, crustaceans, and fish—tend to decrease in body size during periods of intense global warming.

Dr. Paulina Nätscher, a former scientist at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, noted that this reduction in size is a general reaction to environmental stress and can manifest as dwarfing in specific species or a dominance of smaller species within entire communities. This phenomenon serves as a warning signal for modern climate change and could have significant implications for global food chains and the fishing industry.

Complementary observations highlight the physical changes occurring in the oceans. As the oceans absorb approximately 90 percent of the excess heat in the climate system, record-breaking ocean heat content and rising global temperatures are altering coastal environments, shifting sandbanks, and changing wave patterns.
