Marine biology studies reveal octopus aggression and sea cucumber resilience

Recent marine biology studies have revealed unexpected survival and behavioral traits in ocean invertebrates. Researchers observing juvenile Brazilian reef octopuses (Octopus insularis) off the coast of Brazil found that these cephalopods engage in brief, intense physical confrontations with territorial fish. These interactions, described as a ‘fighting club,’ typically last an average of 14 seconds, during which the octopuses use their tentacles to slap away perceived intruders while ignoring non-territorial species.

In a separate discovery, scientists from Memorial University of Newfoundland documented the extraordinary resilience of the cold-water sea cucumber, Psolus fabricii. According to a study published in Science Advances, fragments of this sea cucumber's tissue remained biologically active and alive for over 1,000 days after being amputated. These tissue pieces survived in natural seawater without artificial nutrients or sterile laboratory conditions, challenging existing biological paradigms regarding the autonomous survival of complex organized tissues.
