Marine ecology studies examine environmental health and waste impact in Chile and Ecuador

Recent ecological studies in Chile and Ecuador have highlighted the complex relationship between environmental conditions, human activity, and marine life. In Chile’s Golfo de Arauco, research conducted by the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción analyzed benthic communities and fatty acid profiles to assess environmental health. The study identified a ‘Quality Paradox’ in deep sectors where low oxygen levels coexist with favorable survival indicators, suggesting that local species have adapted to these specific conditions.

In Santa Rosa, Santa Elena, Ecuador, research from the Universidad Estatal Península de Santa Elena examined how solid waste affects coastal ecosystems. The study found that plastic was the most frequent type of waste, accounting for 17.30% of recorded debris. Findings indicated a significant association between waste types and the presence of epibiontic communities, concluding that solid waste acts as artificial habitats that modify the ecological dynamics of coastal ecosystems.
