Marine ecosystems face shifts in microbial and plankton communities due to climate change

New scientific research indicates that climate change is causing fundamental shifts in marine ecosystems, affecting both microbial communities and the base of the food web.

A study from the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences reveals that the decline of kelp forests in Maine is leading to a transition toward turf algae. This shift alters the ecosystem at a microbial level, changing the types of microbes present and the chemical compounds they produce. Senior Research Scientist Douglas Rasher noted that these changes ripple through all levels of the ecosystem, impacting biochemical processes and species relationships.

Simultaneously, a report from the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership warns that rising sea temperatures and changing ocean circulation are altering plankton communities in UK and Irish waters. Findings show that spring phytoplankton blooms in parts of the North Sea are occurring up to a month earlier than in the late 1990s. This shift toward smaller plankton species and altered bloom timing may create mismatches with the life cycles of fish larvae, potentially impacting fish stocks, seabirds, and marine mammals.
