Marine ecosystems face threats from fishing and climate change

Coral ecosystems in the Aegean and Ionian Seas are facing significant threats from destructive fishing practices, such as bottom trawls. The Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation has been documenting mesophotic coral forests at depths exceeding 100 metres to highlight the biodiversity at risk. While the Greek Prime Minister has announced 780 million euros for marine protection, questions remain regarding the efficacy of such funding and its ability to prevent the destruction of these habitats.

In Jamaica, coral reefs are also under pressure from climate change, pollution, and human activity. These reefs are vital for providing food and shelter for fish, supporting local livelihoods, and acting as natural barriers against storm surges. Restoration efforts and the study of coral spawning are being utilized to build more resilient marine ecosystems.
