AfD unveils radical plan to restructure the European Union

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has presented a comprehensive strategy to fundamentally overhaul the European Union, aiming to transform it into an alliance of sovereign nation-states. Presented by co-leader Alice Weidel and René Aust in Strasbourg, the plan seeks to return significant decision-making powers from Brussels to national governments and parliaments.

Key proposals include replacing the directly elected European Parliament with an assembly of delegates appointed by national parliaments. The European Council would become the primary decision-making body, while the European Commission's role would be restricted to a coordinating and administrative secretariat. The party also advocates for national law to take precedence over secondary EU law in areas such as taxation and migration.

Regarding security and economy, the AfD suggests that member states should have the right to opt out of specific EU agreements, such as the Schengen Area, if they cannot protect their borders. The plan also calls for the European Central Bank to strictly adhere to its mandate of price stability and suggests that Germany should no longer act as an excessively burdened paymaster. If these structural reforms are not implemented, the party indicated it would pursue a referendum on Germany’s continued EU membership.
