Marine Police intercepted an abandoned wooden canoe containing a large quantity of suspected cannabis on the River Volta near Tuanikopey Island in Ada during the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Reports indicate that the occupants of the outboard-powered vessel fled by swimming away after spotting the police patrol team under the cover of darkness. The abandoned canoe contained 29 sacks holding between 2,030 and 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa.

In addition to the suspected narcotics, authorities recovered two Yamaha outboard motors with 40HP and 30HP capacities, as well as 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel. The suspected substances and equipment have been secured for forensic examination and further investigation. The Tema Regional Police Command is currently working to identify the individuals responsible for the shipment.
