Marine protected area efficacy questioned amid conservation goals

New research published in PNAS suggests that current marine protected area (MPA) metrics may be misleading. While 10 percent of the Earth’s oceans are officially designated as protected, researchers estimate that only about 2 percent of the oceans are covered by MPAs where ecosystems are actually recovering. This discrepancy is largely attributed to low compliance with fishing restrictions, leading to a disconnect between designated area size and actual ecological efficacy.

On a regional level, California is reporting mixed progress toward its “30x30” goal of conserving 30 percent of its land and waters by 2030. The state has successfully reached 27.1 percent land conservation, but lags behind in coastal waters, which currently stand at 21.9 percent. Much of California’s conservation progress relies on federal land, including national parks and forests.
