Marine Protected Areas boost fish diversity and climate resilience

A global scientific study has confirmed that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are effective tools for recovering declining marine zones by increasing both the variety and abundance of fish populations.

Led by Professor Lisandro Benedetti-Cecchi of the University of Pisa, the research analyzed data from 357 protected areas and 747 unprotected areas across 50 marine ecoregions worldwide. The findings indicate that MPAs play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse impacts of marine heatwaves caused by climate change.

Researchers noted that these areas promote greater functional diversity among fish species, which enhances the adaptive capacity of marine ecosystems against environmental shifts induced by climate change.
