Marine technology firms advance autonomous navigation and subsea docking
Avikus and Vision Marine Technologies are collaborating to test the integration of the NEUBOAT smart navigation platform with the E-Motion twin-motor electric propulsion system. Using the STERK 31E electric boat as a testbed, the partnership aims to evaluate how AI-powered perception, route planning, collision avoidance, and smart docking capabilities interact with electric steering and helm-control systems.
Separately, Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a contract to provide an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) hangar and subsea docking system for a new research vessel being constructed by VARD for Inkfish. The system is designed to allow HUGIN AUVs to be launched, recovered, and docked below the sea surface. By operating below the wave zone, the technology aims to increase operational safety and allow for extended mission windows in higher sea states.
