Marinella di Selinunte port dredging delays spark transparency concerns

Regional deputy Cristina Ciminnisi of the Five Star Movement has criticized the Sicilian Region for failing to respond to requests for information regarding the port of Marinella di Selinunte. The requests, originally submitted in March and renewed in July, seek details on contracts, companies, and payments related to posidonia removal and seabed dredging works conducted over the last five years.

Local fishermen and tourism operators have been waiting years for dredging to address the accumulation of decaying algae, which has caused significant odor issues and hindered maritime activities. The lack of transparency comes amid an ongoing judicial investigation by the Palermo Prosecutor's Office into alleged links between organized crime, public procurement, and regional bureaucracy concerning dredging and waste disposal in Sicilian ports.
