Marinha Grande launches initiatives for International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

In observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the municipality of Marinha Grande has launched several initiatives focused on social inclusion, sustainability, and solidarity. These activities, running until October 24, are part of a district program promoted by the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) Portugal – Leiria District Core.

Local programs include the ‘Eat healthy for less’ campaign, which provides nutritious and economical recipes via social media, and a ‘Food Fortnight’ involving students from local school clusters to promote balanced nutrition and waste prevention. Additionally, the Armazém Solidário association is hosting a solidarity fair.

Broader discussions regarding poverty in Portugal highlight the critical issue of housing rights, aligned with the United Nations theme ‘Safe homes for all’. Experts note that poverty extends beyond a lack of basic resources, encompassing social vulnerability caused by geopolitical conflicts, energy dependency, rising interest rates, and the inability of families without savings to withstand economic shocks.
