Mariënheem flower meadow promotes local biodiversity
In Mariënheem, Martin Schutte has transformed a large field on Wissinkweg into a biodiverse flower meadow. Driven by a passion for ecological responsibility, Schutte manages the land to support various species, including butterflies like the Red Admiral and Small Orange Tip, as well as birds such as finches and swifts.
To maintain biodiversity, Schutte uses specific seed mixes and implements a staggered sowing method to account for sun and shade. He focuses on providing nectar plants like white clover and coneflower. Despite recent drought conditions affecting the meadow's appearance, Schutte maintains a hands-off approach to irrigation, believing nature should sustain itself.
