Mariënheem residents find relief as bypass funding is maintained

Residents of Mariënheem have expressed relief following news that the Dutch cabinet intends to maintain funding for a proposed bypass road. The N35 highway currently cuts directly through the village, a situation that has existed since 1834.

Local advocate Gerard Nij Bijvank, who has campaigned for the bypass for over thirty years, noted that the village is effectively split in two by the road, which carries between 16,000 and 20,000 vehicles daily. While previous funding promises were retracted due to budget deficits, the current prioritization by Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Vincent Karremans provides renewed hope for the project.

However, concerns regarding budget shortages and the maintenance of existing infrastructure remain. Martijn Dadema, a deputy from the province of Overijssel, previously cautioned that national financial constraints could lead to further delays.
