Marino Zapete donates RD$2.4 million to deaf students
Journalist and writer Marino Zapete has donated RD$2.4 million to the Instituto para Sordos Santa Rosa. The funds were obtained from former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez Sánchez following a court ruling for moral damages.
The donation, formalized on September 24, consists of RD$2 million in compensation and RD$480,000 in judicial interest. Consuelo Saviñón Mera, director of the institute, stated that the resources will support the education of more than 200 low-income deaf students.
The legal proceedings concluded after the Supreme Court of Justice declared Rodríguez Sánchez’s cassation appeal inadmissible on August 31, 2026. This decision upheld a previous ruling from the Court of Appeal of the National District. The original case stemmed from a 2019 investigation conducted by Zapete regarding asphalt supply contracts involving a company represented by the former Attorney General’s sister.
