INE and IETAM launch calls for independent candidacies

Mexican electoral authorities have issued calls for independent candidacies for the 2026-2027 electoral process.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has approved the convocatoria for citizens seeking independent candidacy for federal deputies under the principle of relative majority. Interested individuals must submit their manifestation of intent by December 13, 2026, and have until February 12, 2027, to gather the required citizen support. A special regime is established for 204 highly marginalized municipalities, allowing support to be collected via printed backup forms.

In Tamaulipas, the Instituto Electoral de Tamaulipas (IETAM) has also opened the process for independent candidates. This includes applications for 22 state deputies, as well as municipal presidencies, syndicates, and councilors across 43 municipalities. The deadline for manifestations of intent is December 1, 2026. Candidates in Tamaulipas are required to form a civil association to serve as their formal administrative support, which must be registered with the Public Registry of Property and Commerce and obtain a tax ID from the SAT.
