Rhine Group launched by Mario Draghi and Patrick Collison

Mario Draghi and Stripe CEO Patrick Collison have launched the Rhine Group, a new independent think tank designed to bolster European competitiveness. The group aims to translate the 2024 Draghi report's recommendations into actionable policy reforms to help the European Union compete with the United States and China.

The initiative brings together a coalition of approximately 55 influential figures from business, academia, finance, and politics. Notable members include former Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao and telecoms mogul Xavier Niel. Luis Garicano, a former MEP, will serve as the organization's executive director.

A central concern for the group is Europe's lagging position in emerging technologies. The Rhine Group highlights that only four of the world's fifty largest technology companies are European, warning that the continent risks falling behind in critical sectors like artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The group's first meeting is scheduled for late September 2026.
