Mario Draghi warns of Europe’s economic challenges and productivity gap
Former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi has warned that Europe faces deep economic challenges due to a widening productivity gap and a failing traditional export-driven model. Speaking at ETH Zürich, Draghi noted that European productivity growth has fallen to approximately half the rate of the United States.
Draghi identified fierce competition from China and rising American protectionism as primary drivers of this shift. He argued that without significant structural overhauls, such as accelerating the capital markets union and completing the single market, European governments will struggle to finance rising public debt. He emphasized the need for heavy investment in new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to remain competitive.
Broader analysis suggests Europe’s decline is linked to several systemic factors, including overregulation, high energy costs, and the complexities of decarbonization. These issues, combined with fragmented capital markets and lengthy permitting processes, have hindered the ability of European companies to scale globally compared to their American counterparts. The IMF estimates European labor productivity is roughly 20% below that of the US.
