Mario Kunasek calls for preventive detention and military-led deportations

Mario Kunasek, the FPÖ Governor of Styria, is calling for stricter measures to combat Islamist threats and improve the deportation of asylum seekers in Austria. Kunasek suggested that "preventive detention is also a possibility" to ensure public safety, though he noted that the federal legislature would need to establish the necessary legal framework.

To ensure continuous monitoring of high-risk individuals, Kunasek proposed the use of ankle monitors. Regarding deportations, he argued that if commercial or charter flights are unsuccessful, the Austrian Federal Army should be utilized. He suggested adapting the four transport aircraft the military is scheduled to acquire by 2028 to facilitate deportation flights.

Kunasek also criticized the current ease with which certain individuals can obtain Austrian citizenship, specifically citing a case involving a convicted Syrian terrorist. He emphasized that asylum should be viewed as temporary protection rather than an automatic path to permanent residency or citizenship.
