Nebrodi 2 Maxiprocesso: 45 convicted and 325 years in prison
The Court of Patti has issued a landmark ruling in the Nebrodi 2 Maxiprocesso, sentencing 45 individuals to a combined total of 325 years in prison. The case, which stems from a major investigation by the Messina District Anti-Mafia Directorate, centers on a sophisticated criminal system used to defraud the European Union of agricultural funds.
Prosecutors alleged that organized crime groups used fictitious or illegal control over land to illicitly access EU subsidies. The convictions include charges of mafia association, aggravated fraud, extortion, and drug trafficking. Among the most significant sentences are 23 years for Sebastiano Bontempo Scavo and 22 years for Vincenzo Galati. Additionally, seven agricultural companies were hit with substantial financial sanctions, and eleven businesses linked to the defendants were confiscated.
Giuseppe Antoci, a former president of the Nebrodi Park and current Member of the European Parliament, hailed the verdict as a victory for the state. Antoci, who survived a mafia assassination attempt in 2016, had been a key proponent of legal protocols designed to prevent such agricultural fund fraud.
