Mario Voigt re-elected as CDU Thuringia chairman

Mario Voigt has been re-elected as the chairman of the CDU in Thuringia during a state party congress in Eisenach. Running without an opponent, Voigt secured 84.41 percent of the vote, receiving 122 affirmative votes against 23 against and 3 abstentions.

Voigt, who has led the CDU in Thuringia since 2022 and has served as Minister President since 2024, defended the performance of the ‘Brombeer-Koalition’—composed of the CDU, BSW, and SPD. He highlighted the government's focus on solutions, citing significant investments in municipalities and support for volunteer work.

Political challenges remain for Voigt. He is facing a motion of no confidence filed by the AfD parliamentary group, which is set to take place in the state parliament next Friday. Additionally, the federal BSW leadership has called for its Thuringia branch to break the coalition, a move the state executive has resisted, though two MPs have expressed support for the federal call. Voigt also continues to contest allegations of plagiarism regarding his doctoral thesis, stating he will seek legal recourse to defend his academic title.
