Mario Voigt withdraws lawsuit over revoked doctorate

Thuringia's Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) has announced he is withdrawing his lawsuit against the Chemnitz University of Technology regarding the revocation of his doctoral degree. The university stripped Voigt of his title in January following allegations of plagiarism in his 2008 dissertation concerning U.S. presidential election campaigns.

Voigt stated that while the decision was difficult, he wishes to avoid a protracted legal battle that would consume his time and energy. He emphasized the need to focus on his duties as head of government and the political pressures facing the political center following recent state elections.

The plagiarism scandal has placed significant political pressure on Voigt. The opposition AfD, led by Björn Höcke, has used the issue to challenge his leadership, having already seen two motions of no confidence fail. Additionally, a recent attempt by the AfD to dissolve the Thuringian state parliament failed to achieve the required two-thirds majority, receiving 34 votes in favor and 52 against.
