Marisa Manchado, Spanish composer, dies in Urda train collision

Renowned Spanish composer Marisa Manchado has died at age 70 following a major railway accident in Urda, Toledo. The collision, involving a Renfe high-speed train and a stationary Iryo train, resulted in at least 69 fatalities and over 100 injuries.

Manchado, a 2024 National Music Prize winner, was traveling to Seville to participate in a university symposium when the accident occurred. The Spanish Minister of Transport, Óskar Puente, stated that the tragedy was caused by incorrect instructions from a central dispatch center following a safety system failure on the Madrid-Seville line.

A founding member and former president of the Madrid Composers Association (AMCC), Manchado was a prominent figure in contemporary Spanish music. Her extensive career included over 150 works, including operas such as ‘La Regenta’ and ‘Cristal de agua fría’. She was also recognized for her commitment to increasing the visibility of women in music and served as deputy director general of Music and Dance at the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music.
